EP. 43: My Boyfriend Gave Me an Ultimatum Before He'll Propose... Is This Love or Control?

"I'll marry you... but first you need to lose weight, work on yourself, and learn about money." What would you do if your long-term partner gave you this ultimatum? It’s jarring, but it’s not as flashy or absurd as some of the ultimatums I've heard before, so it made me pause.

As a relationship coach, I can see that he’s trying to communicate some very real fears of his, even though he’s not saying it in the best way. Which is why one half of the internet thinks the boyfriend is a control freak and that she should dump him. The other half believes that he’s right and that she needs to get her act together before getting married. But I don’t think the situation is as black or white as the internet is making it out to be.

In this episode of Life & Love by Design, I'm breaking down a viral Reddit story about a boyfriend who gave his girlfriend an ultimatum before proposing, and the internet is completely divided. Is this loving accountability or emotional manipulation? We'll explore the difference between encouraging growth and creating conditions for love, why emotional safety matters more than perfection, and the question every couple should ask before saying "I do."

If you're dating, engaged, or wondering whether your relationship is built on healthy love, this conversation is for you.
